Elizabethan Comfort Pattern
This ensemble is based on the kirtle and gown from Janet Arnold's Patterns of Fashion. The lines suggest that the garments were suitable for pregnancy, but the style was worn by women of all ages and classes, in varying materials.
The Kirtle is an A-line, semi-fitted underdress, with detachable laced sleeves. It fastens in the back with laces, and has separate two-part curved sleeves that lace into the armholes. The hem is stiffened to support the skirts. The front panel of the kirtle can be decorated, or cut in a richer fabric than the rest of the garment. While the kirtle would properly have been worn over a smock, and often a corset, such as the ones in the Underpinnings package, it is not strictly neccesary to do so.
The Gown is a semi-fitted coat, with short shaped puffed "mahoitered" sleeves or shoulder wings. It can also be worn with several of the sleeve styles from the Elizabethan Lady's Wardrobe pattern. There are two front opening options, one cut away to show the kirtle or a forepart, the other fastening down the front to the hem. The gown may be made lined or unlined, with a wide variety of decoration.
The kirtle and the gown have optional maternity hemlines and breastfeeding openings.
In addition, the package comes with a 90-page detailed instruction manual, extensively illustrated, 3-hole punched for insertion in a binder. This includes a great deal of instruction in advanced sewing and costuming techniques, as well as appendices, sizing and measuring charts, and a detailed bibliography. The patterns are multi-sized from 2 to 28.

"Irish Leine" (Shirt)
With this pattern you can make several different styles of the traditional Irish shirt called a leine (pronounced "linn") worn by both men and women. The shirt is very large and loose and has full, bagged sleeves gathered at the shoulder and down the arm on a drawstring or with its sleeve gathers stitched in place with stitches or decorative trim. There are diamond shaped gussets under the arm for ease.
Two different sleeves are given - rectangular or triangular - and two necklines - scooped or slit front. While both necklines and sleeve styles are seen on both men and women, for women the leine commonly is styled with the scoop neckline and large rectangular bag sleeves. For men, the neckline is often higher with the slit front opening, and frequently the sleeves are the somewhat smaller triangular bagged style. A long leine could be belted and worn alone, or with an ionar (a type of short doublet).
This is a very loose fitting garment and some people prefer their leine looser than others. Choose the appropriate cutting line by comparing your bust/chest measurements to the size chart. If you like a lot of room in your shirts, choose the next size up.
Multisize: 33 inch chest through 52 inch chest.
Price: $13.00

"Irish" Dress & Underskirt
This is a pattern of the style of dress adopted by the Irish clan groups at many Renaissance Fairs and Festivals. It is a simplification of the actual dress worn by the Celtic clans during the Renaissance and is worn over a type of large sleeve chemise called a leine.
The Irish dress is a simple front opening dress worn over a contrasting underskirt. On top is a sleeveless lined bodice that is lightly bones in the front and on the sides. The bodice attaches to an open front skirt just above the natural waistline. The bodice portion of the dress can be closed by lacing through grommets, with button holes or decorative eyes, or can be fastened with decorative hooks and eyes.
The dress skirts are gored to reduce fullness at the waist. They may be pleated or gathered to the bodice and may or may not be lined per your preference. The pleated version is fuller than the gathered version. The gored underskirt may also be pleated or gathered to a drawstring or waistband option.
Multisize: 33 1/2 inch chest through 47 inch chest.
